Sri Lanka has announced that it is moving its centuries-old folk medicine system for protection under the international intellectual property system, local media reported Saturday.

Faced with a longstanding lack of progress at the World Trade Organization and the World Intellectual Property Organization on the protection of genetic resources and traditional knowledge, some developing countries are examining the possibility of moving outside the multilateral system toward a plurilateral agreement with like-minded countries.
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state government is digging deep into the traditional tribal knowledge to come with an Ayurvedic cure to male infertility. Ayurdhara Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of the Kerala State Federation for SC/ST Development Cooperative, has come up with a unique organic Ayurveda product, called X Power, which it claims is effective in treating male infertility, oligospermia (deficiency of sperm cells) apart from enhancing libido and vitality.
Although the intellectual property system can be used to promote and protect traditional knowledge (being knowledge that has ancient roots and is often oral), traditional knowledge is not always protected by the conventional intellectual property system.
